Quito, Ecuador
In 2008, I participated in a MassArt graduate level travel course to Ecuador. As the official trip photographer, I documented our travels for the college.
We were invited to teach for a day in an elementary school where the children had no formal art classes. We created a choice-based classroom experience for the students, pairing up and managing a project area, including setup, instruction, and supervision.
My contribution to the day was to create a digital photography project. After collecting several digital cameras and a laptop computer from my classmates, my partner and I taught students how to use the cameras - stressing subject matter, framing, and point of view. Students experimented with angles by standing on chairs, sitting on the floor, getting close to their subject matter, and setting up and directing shots. After everyone had a chance to take pictures, we created a digital slideshow for everyone to view, sharing in the students’ success.
