As an artist, I'm inspired to create work about the human experience. As a teacher, summers are my own - a time dedicated to resting, recharging, and creating. Living in New England, the weather is always a factor and summer is when I return to creating a series of cyanotypes. Regardless of destination, I can be found collecting common specimens and creating images. Cyanotypes are well suited for this project because they are photographic, portable, and can be made outdoors. Making art while traveling requires a certain commitment to planning and organization. In advance of my travels, I prepare coated surfaces with cyanotype sensitizer and pack them in a light-tight box. The paper is small, for portability and flexibility. Once the paper is prepared, I can create images anywhere there is sun and fresh water. This series of coastal botanicals was made in the summer of 2016 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
